The carnival in behalf of Dionysos, the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, of ritual madness and ecstasy, is very fun and colorful. It takes place at the end of every February. These carnivals taking place in Xanthi and many other towns in Greece such as Patra can be referred as the preparation period for the Christian fasting which lasts 49 days. That's why during these carnivals you must eat,drink and have fun as much as you can. People dress up and 'shuffle' on the streets. People coming from other towns make Saturday night overcrowded. And the most pleasant day of the carnival is sunday when the carnival parade takes place. People go on drinking and do not lose hangover effect of last night. With the sunset the fire of the carnival is lighted and of course fireworks.
And the carnival is completed as people dance all around.

Her yıl şubat sonunda, yunan mitolojisindde şarap, bağ, haz ve eğlence tanrısı olan Dionysos adına yapılan karnaval çok eğlenceli ve renkli. Karnaval boyunca Dionysos'un adına yakışır biçimde durmaksızın içki, eğlence, müzik ve dans var. En büyükleri Yunanistan'ın, Patra ve İskeçe kentlerinde düzenlenen bu karnavallar, bitimiyle Hritiyanların hayvansal gıda yemediği 49 günlük oruç dönemini başlatıyor. Karnaval süresince insanlar bin bir kılıkta sokaklarda dolaşıyor. Cumartesi gecesi farklı şehirlerden gelen insanlarla kalabalık en üst seviyeye ulaştığı gece. En keyifli günü ise karnaval yürüyüşünün yapıldığı pazar günü. Kostümler giyiliyor ve akşamdan kalmalığında verdiği sarhoşlukla sokaklarda dans ederek içki içilmeye devam ediliyor. Güneşin batmasıyla birlikte Dionysos heykeli yakılıyor, havai fişekler atılıyor.
Ve karnaval insanlar dansı eşliğinde tamamlanıyor.
